{"id":957,"date":"2020-07-07T17:55:18","date_gmt":"2020-07-07T17:55:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.talesfromtheboatshed.com\/?p=957"},"modified":"2020-07-07T17:55:18","modified_gmt":"2020-07-07T17:55:18","slug":"lilys-learning-tower","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.talesfromtheboatshed.com\/?p=957","title":{"rendered":"Lily&#8217;s Learning Tower"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A little project from which I have learnt a lot: Lily&#8217;s Learning Tower.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Putting screws into the &#8216;end grain&#8217; of plywood does not make for the strongest joint &#8211; the risk is that the plywood will split under load along the glue lines of the laminate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To make this simple piece, made from 18mm birch ply, I used dowels to provide a cross grain hold for the screws.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/www.talesfromtheboatshed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/image.jpeg?fit=720%2C960\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-958\"\/><figcaption>It may seem old-fashioned, but the brace and bit gives me good control and very crisply-edged holes for the dowel pugs.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/www.talesfromtheboatshed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/image-3.jpeg?fit=720%2C960\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-965\"\/><figcaption>Pieces of dowel, cut slightly too long were hammered into place and were a snug fit.  The excess was trimmed off with a flush cut saw and I used a block plane to get this smooth finish.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I used the same sized dowel to plug the counterbored screw holes.
